History of American Girl Dolls In 1983 entrepreneur, Pleasant T Rowland was looking for dolls for her neices for Christmas but was only able to find baby dolls and Barbie dolls. She wanted something to represent preteen girls. That search, coupled with a trip to Colonial Williamsburg inspired the American Girl Dolls.
In 1986 the first of three dolls were introduced. They were Kirsten Larsen, Samantha Parkington and Molly McIntire. From 1986-1998 the company grew and added three more dolls. They were Felicity Merriman, Addy Walker, and Josefina Montoya. They were followed by the American Girl of Today and "Bitty Baby."
As the years went by the company evolved and in 2000 Kit Kittredge was added and at the same time a line of Limited Edition modern dolls which would only be in production for one year was introduced. Kaya came in 2002.
